Roof hatch guardrails are safety rail systems installed around the opening of a roof access hatch. When a maintenance worker climbs through a hatch and stands up on the roof, there is no protection from falling back through the opening or being struck by the hatch door. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.29 requires fall protection around roof hatch openings, and the standard applies to any facility where workers access the roof.
Hatch guardrail systems typically include a self-closing gate on the ladder side of the hatch so the opening is protected when no one is actively climbing through it. They bolt to the roof deck structure around the hatch frame without penetrating the roof membrane. For facility managers, having compliant guardrails in place eliminates a specific and well-documented OSHA citation risk.
Sentry Roofing supplies and installs roof hatch guardrail systems as part of new roof projects or as a standalone addition to existing buildings. We verify the installation meets current OSHA requirements for rail height, load capacity, and gate operation.
